Малыш Барри строит у себя дома нечто вроде горы: точно такой же образ повсюду преследует Роя. Радиотелескоп в Голстоне принимает странные сигналы - серии одинаковых пульсаций. Переводчик Лакомба думает, что в этих посланиях содержатся указания широты и долготы. Барри играет на ксилофоне пять нот, найденные Лакомбом, и продолжает рисовать контур горы. Лакомб подает им знак рукой, означающий те самые 5 нот на языке жестов, и они понимают его. Космический корабль взлетает.► Близкие контакты третьего рода появились на свет через десять лет после 2001: Космической одиссеи, 2001: A Space Odyssey и стали для 70-х гг. примерно тем же, чем стал фильм Кубрика для 60-х. Всего за десятилетие американский кинематограф заметно впал в детство. Близкие контакты доказывают это явление и во многом несут за него ответственность. Оба фильма - и это чуть ли не единственная их точка пересечения - стремятся прежде всего к визуальному опыту; не поддающемуся словесному описанию. 2001 порвал с научно-фантастическим кинематографом 50-х гг. и придал жанру философское измерение. Близкие контакты, напротив, возобновляют отношения с кинематографом 50-х (ностальгия обязывает), однако убирает присущий этому кинематографу агрессивный взгляд на отношения между землянами и пришельцами с других планет. Наоборот, фильм пытается показать эти отношения в блаженных тонах (рискуя тем, что временами, особенно в финале, блаженные тона могут обернуться элементарной глупой наивностью). В чем фильм продолжает и превосходит традиции кинематографа 50-х, так это в богатстве и совершенстве спецэффектов. Несомненно, стоит рассматривать Дагласа Трамбелла как полноценного соавтора фильма - ведь именно он отвечает за все лучшее, что в нем есть.Близкие контакты третьего рода - история об установлении контакта, общения. Содержание и последствия этого общения полностью отданы на откуп зрительскому воображению. Спилберг задает рамки: заполнить их предоставляется зрителю. Это лучший способ подмочить себе репутацию. В основе кинематографа Спилберга лежат 2 характерные особенности, которые могли бы сыграть для него роковую роль, если бы он не обратил их в залог успеха. Его изворотливость походит на чудо. Прежде всего, он - полная противоположность исследователя или первопроходца. Он не влечет зрителя за собой на неизведанные территории (в отличие от Кубрика и его Космической одиссеи). В годы, когда (благодаря, в том числе, и Космической одиссее) научная фантастика стала в кинематографе доминирующим жанром, он дает зрителю именно то, что тот желает видеть, только с невиданной прежде пышностью. К слову, Спилберг выдает себя в переделанной версии фильма, нареченной «специальным изданием» (1980). Иными словами: стоит зрителю озвучить свою волю, Спилберг ей подчинится. В этом новом издании он сократил сцены, в которых Ричард Дрейфусс воздвигает макет горы (они несколько утомили публику), и удлиняет финальный эпизод с инопланетянами, поскольку зрители сетовали на то, что в оригинальной версии их почти не видно.2-я характерная черта кинематографа Спилберга - неспособность к созданию образов из плоти и крови. Благодаря эмоциональной диалектике, автор подчеркивает сначала наивную веру героя, который считает, что всегда можно что-то изменить, а потом – его отчаяние, когда он понимает, что этого не происходит. Его отношение к ситуации, которую – к счастью – все еще можно назвать «футуристической», соотносится с позицией любого из наших современников к тому, что происходит в данный момент на планете. С художественной точки зрения фильм красив, нежен и содержит несколько смелых решений: в частности, бóльшую часть фильма на экране действует один персонаж в обществе 2 роботов (их роли исполняют инвалиды без рук и без ног).
